A Mid-Life Renewal
Greta Ehlers was diagnosed with Stevens Johnson syndrome at the age of two and suffered for 30 years before receiving treatment at Boston Foundation for Sight.
“I couldn’t even answer my door without my sunglasses on a year ago. And at times even with sunglasses on, a scarf wrapped around my head and my hands over my eyes I’d be in agony riding in the van with my family on a cloudy day,” said Greta.

PROSE treatment made her feel like a new woman. Greta is thankful for what Boston Foundation for Sight did for her, and what they do for so many others.
“Most people go through a mid-life crisis. I feel like I’ve gotten to go through a mid-life renewal. In the past six months, three rooms have gotten painted, curtains and cupboards that made spaces ‘too dark’ have been removed, and clutter that I never felt good enough to sort through is now gone. I am cherishing small things: moments I find myself laughing at what my kids are saying while I’m driving instead of clawing at my leg with one hand to try to distract myself from how bad my eyes are hurting while I’m trying to deliver them safely to school…moments when I realize I’ve left my house without my sunglasses! Life is really different these days. Much, much busier for sure. I’ve never slept better in my life, maybe because I’ve never had such opportunities to wear myself out each day!”
Greta’s church recently showed a video about her suffering and the healing she found at Boston Foundation for Sight. After learning about BFS and PROSE treatment, a home health nurse who attends Greta’s church connected Greta with Faye, a woman who was diagnosed with SJS in 2009. Faye also, traveled to Boston in the fall of 2010 to complete PROSE treatment.
Greta said, “I cannot tell you how thrilling it is to know that Faye won’t have to suffer for 30-some years like I did. There are no words for my joy.”
