FOR PATIENTS | Patients We've Helped
A New Beginning
Nine year old Brandon Martinez came to see us this past September.
He developed acute Stevens-Johnson syndrome one year earlier,. This
is a rare and violent sensitivity reaction to medications, including
over the counter medicines that you or I take without a thought. His
whole body blistered, including his eyes and when Brandon recovered,
the surface of his eyes were so raw that, in addition to severely impaired
vision, he experience excruciating pain that tormented him from the
time he awoke each day until he fell asleep at night. Moreover, sensitivity
to light was so disabling that, living in Florida, he was virtually
housebound. Because there is no other treatment for this devastating
eye disease, Brandon was referred to our clinic to be fitted with the
Boston Scleral Lens Prosthetic Device that creates a protective liquid
bandage over his diseased corneas. Today, Brandon has near normal vision,
no eye pain and is able to again play with his friends outdoors in the
sunniest days.
