The Gift of Sight

For seven terrifying years Evelyn Sanjines, a young wife and mother, thought she would never see again. A victim of Stevens-Johnson syndrome—a devastating reaction to a common over-the-counter medication that severely damaged the surface of her eyes and tear glands—she was tortured by pain, extreme sensitivity to light and recurring corneal ulcers. Trapped in her home with her eyelids sewn almost completely shut as a last resort to save her eyes, she struggled to care for her little boy.

After seven years of treatment at some of New York’s best hospitals, Evelyn grew increasingly desperate. She had almost given up hope of experiencing the simple pleasures of life again—taking her child outside to play, reading a book, going to see a movie—when her husband found the answer to their prayers—the Boston Foundation for Sight.

The Foundation’s unique Boston Scleral Lens, which fits over her corneas and bathes them in protective fluid, restored Evelyn’s sight and her life. Now that she can open her eyes without pain and see again, she and her husband have realized their long-delayed dream of having a second child. "The Boston Foundation for Sight gave me back my sight--and my life," she says simply. "It was like a miracle for us finding your website."
