FOR PATIENTS | Patients We've Helped Four-year-old Ekin came to the Foundation with his parents from Istanbul, Turkey, in 1998. Cradled in his mothers arms, he buried his head in her shoulder, trying to shut out even the dim light in the examining room. Ekins eyes had been ravaged by Stevens-Johnson syndrome, the most devastating of all blinding diseases, after he had a violent reaction to a common non-prescription cold remedy. Each blink of his eyelids triggered searing pain in this tortured child. No wonder they were always closed. Little Ekins world and his life had become a nightmare. Although his parents were told that nothing more could be done for him, they did not give up hope. Their exhaustive search was rewarded when they discovered the website of the Boston Foundation for Sight and learned that there was hope for improving Ekins condition with the Foundations Boston Scleral Lens. They grasped at the chance and flew to Boston. Within days of being fitted with the Boston Scleral Lens, Ekin was able to open his eyes without pain and see. Now a rambunctious, playful eight-year-old enjoying school and normal childhood pleasures, Ekin used his limited English to thank the Foundation and "grandpapa" Dr. Perry Rosenthal for giving him his sight and his life back. |
