WHO WE ARE

Our Staff

Perry Rosenthal, M.D., Founding President and Vice Chairman

Photo of Dr. Perry Rosenthal with a young patientBorn in Canada, Dr. Perry Rosenthal received his undergraduate and medical degrees from McGill University. During his postgraduate training in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Rosenthal founded its first contact lens clinic. This experience introduced him to the unique but unmet potential of rigid contact lenses to restore the sight of people who had become blind from corneal diseases. In his search for ways to overcome the obstacles to their use, Dr. Rosenthal led the breakthrough development of a new generation of oxygen-porous plastics known as The Boston Lens® that overcame the leading cause of contact lens wearing failure, corneal asphyxiation. The acquisition of his company by Bausch & Lomb in 1983 provided the means by which Dr. Rosenthal was able to pursue the development of his vision-restoring lenses and the founding of the nonprofit Boston Foundation for Sight.

Dr. Rosenthal is assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and a recognized authority in the therapeutic and vision-rehabilitative use of contact lenses. He is a frequent guest lecturer at national and international professional meetings and the author of many scientific papers on this subject.

Gary F. Gut, President and CEO

Gary Gut received his MBA from Harvard Business School and went on to become a strategic management consultant at Bain & Company.  A successful entrepreneur, Gary co-founded a national chain of ophthalmic ambulatory surgery centers and a medical management business.  He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Buckingham Browne & Nichols School and the Conservatory Lab Charter School and a Trustee of Building Impact and The Advent School.  Gary was chosen by BFS after an extensive national search to oversee the Foundation’s strategic planning and business development.

Mark Cohen, Executive Director
Mark Cohen has directed the Foundation’s development and expansion since he arrived in 2003, when the Foundation had a staff of only 4.  At this time, he is directing most of his energy recruiting new BOS-P Partner Clinics nationally and internationally while continuing to seek new sources of funding for our expansion and research.

Dr. Jacobs’ three-year residency in Ophthalmology was spent at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in Boston where she also completed a fellowship in cornea and external disease, supported by a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship. Since 1992 she has been Director of the Cornea Service at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and has been on staff at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary.
