Christina Abuata OD
Christina Abuata, OD BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellow

Dr. Christina Abuata was born and raised in Houston, TX. She completed her BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellowship and joined the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in 2021. She is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Texas Optometric Association.

She graduated with honors from Houston Baptist University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She then received her Doctorate of Optometry degree from the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry in San Antonio, TX in 2019. She received numerous awards including academic scholarships, Beta Sigma Kappa Honors, and the Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care.

Dr. Abuata continued her training by completing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Cornea and Contact Lenses with the Texas Eye Research and Technology Center at the University of Houston College of Optometry. During that year she gained training and experience in fitting specialty contact lenses on complex corneas including patients with keratoconus, corneal transplants, ocular surface disease, and dry eyes. She also participated in a variety of clinical research projects. After completing her Fellowship, she stayed on as Clinical Adjunct faculty at the University of Houston.

Dr. Abuata is currently practicing at the Alkek Eye Center at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where she is managing and treating patients with specialty contact lenses. In her spare time, she enjoys exercising, biking, hiking, and spending time with her loved ones.

Stephen Pflugfelder, MD Baylor
Stephen C. Pflugfelder, MD

Dr. Stephen C. Pflugfelder is a graduate of SUNY Upstate Medical University Syracuse. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by a corneal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He was invited to join the faculty of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 1985 and was promoted to professor in 1998. Dr. Pflugfelder returned to the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine as a professor in July 2000, and was awarded the James and Margaret Elkins Chair in Ophthalmology in 2002.

Dr. Pflugfelder has published more than 150 research articles, book chapters, and monographs on disease and surgery of the cornea, including excimer laser vision correction surgery. He most recently co-authored a sentinel textbook, Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Disorders. He has been named one of the “Best Doctors in America” in a survey of physicians. He served on the editorial board of the journals Cornea and American Journal of Ophthalmology. He is the president of the International Ocular Surface Society. Dr. Pflugfelder also serves as the director of the Ocular Surface Center, where research is conducted in the area of ocular surface disorders.

Mitchell Weikert, MD Baylor
Mitchell P. Weikert, MD, MS

Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Weikert received degrees in both electrical and bio-medical engineering. He received his medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine. During his ophthalmology residency, completed at Baylor and the Cullen Eye Institute, he received the Everett L. Goar Award for Best Resident Research and served as Chief Resident during his third year of training. Dr. Weikert completed a fellowship in cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine’s John A. Moran Eye Center and then had appointments at several Salt Lake City hospitals. He joined the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in July 2003.

Dr. Weikert’s research interests include ophthalmic applications of wavefront technology, ocular surface rehabilitation and biomedical optics. He has also authored several book chapters, research articles and abstracts in ophthalmic literature. Dr. Weikert is an active lecturer in his specialization of cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery and is a current member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
