About PROSE

PROSE treatment by BostonSight is a custom, non-surgical medical treatment that helps people living with corneal and ocular surface disease find lasting comfort, clarity, and quality of life. For many people, PROSE is their only option to restore vision and end suffering from critical and devastating eye issues.

During treatment, PROSE providers customize prosthetic devices out of gas-permeable polymers for each patient’s condition and unique eye shape. PROSE providers work in partnership with other medical specialists to ensure coordination of care.

Long-Term Success

PROSE treatment was at the forefront of the specialty lens industry and has been used successfully for more than 30 years. We developed the first fluid-ventilated scleral lens, and in 1994, we were the first to obtain FDA approval to use scleral lenses for visual and therapeutic purposes.

Advanced Customization

We use proprietary software to design PROSE prosthetic scleral devices and manufacture them on-site in our Needham lab.

Highly Trained Providers

PROSE treatment is provided by optometrists who have completed an intensive BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellowship; they work alongside cornea specialist ophthalmologists.

Prosthetic Ecosystem

The PROSE device creates a new smooth surface over the diseased or damaged cornea or ocular surface.

Co-Management

PROSE Providers work in partnership with your primary eye care specialist and other medical specialists to coordinate your care.

In their own words

“PROSE has made a significant impact on both my eye comfort and functionality. I had not been able to read much due to dry and very “heavy” tired eyes, as well difficulty with night driving and very difficult daylight photosensitivity….the PROSE lenses have been a blessing in a profound way allowing for my ability to do activities of daily living like reading, driving and being outside without sunglasses, etc. and I am so very grateful I was referred for a fitting and that they work!!”

“After cornea transplant due to Fuchs’ Dystrophy, right eye vision was 20/400. After 10 months of trying various hybrid lenses that didn’t work, I received my first PROSE scleral lens in August ’06. Resulting vision 20/15. After left eye transplant, went directly to BostonSight and with PROSE scleral lens had 20/20 vision. Staff support services excellent, worth the daily routine care to have perfect vision with PROSE devices for 17+ years.”

“Before I started wear a PROSE lens, I was legally blind in my left eye. I was unable to see even the large “E” on the eye chart. Now I am able to read even some of the small rows on the chart. I am also able to drive which is a big plus.”

“Doctors at Boston Sight are committed miracle workers. I’d be legally blind without my PROSE lenses.”

“I’m a gaffer who does lighting on tv and movies. Before going to BostonSight I was seriously thinking that I’d have to find different career because of pain and poor vision. Since going to Boston, I’ve excelled in my career and have a better quality of life.”

“PROSE has given me the quality of life I need. My eyesight was getting progressively worse – I don’t know what I would do without them.”

Common questions

PROSE is delivered by optometrists who have completed an intensive BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellowship and cornea specialist ophthalmologists. During treatment, providers customize prosthetic scleral lens devices for your unique eye condition and shape. With compassionate care at the heart of our approach, we make your entire treatment experience as supportive and healing as possible. PROSE providers work with you, your support system, and your medical providers to develop an effective treatment plan, together. You will continue to be followed by your primary eye care provider during and after treatment.

PROSE devices are FDA-cleared, transparent domes, about the size of a nickel, made of gas-permeable plastic that allows oxygen to reach the surface of your eye. The devices rest on the sclera – the white part of your eye – and vault over the cornea to create a smooth surface over the distorted, damaged, or diseased cornea. They are filled with fresh, sterile, preservative-free saline each day at the time of application and are removed at bedtime.
