Our History

1985

Pioneers from the start

Develops the first fluid-ventilated scleral lens, using a new oxygen-permeable polymer material allowing oxygenated tears to flow in and out of the lens bowl.

1992

BostonSight founded

Clinic is founded as the National Scleral Lens Foundation, later renamed Boston Foundation for Sight.

1994

FDA Approval

First to obtain an FDA pre-market approval to use scleral lenses for visual and therapeutic purposes, and first to use mathematical spline functions to customize scleral lens designs.

1998

Design to Fit Software

Develops software to power the spline curve functions, allowing BostonSight practitioners to customize scleral lens designs used in PROSE®.

2005

Restoring Sight Across the Globe

First PROSE Network Clinic is established in India with L.V. Prasad Eye Institute

2008

Expanding at Home

First U.S. PROSE Network Clinic is established

FitAcademy® for Residents is born, bringing cornea and contact lens residents from across the United States and Canada to Boston for a 2-day learning retreat.

Introduced SCLERALIG, BostonSight’s latest innovation

SCLERALIG, BostonSight’s latest innovation, is introduced, using image topography to map the eye for a truly custom scleral lens fit.

BostonSight SCLERAL moves into the Latin American market through a distribution partnership with Spectrum International

Announced two FitKits®

BostonSight SCLERAL launches 16.0-17.0mm diameter FitKit®

2022

FitAcademy® Immersive is born

FitAcademy® Immersive is born, with practitioners from Europe coming to the Needham Clinic for hands-on education.  

Lensy makes her debut as BostonSight’s friendly ambassador.

2023

BostonSight SCLERAL continues global expansion

BostonSight receives a grant from the Center for Advanced Manufacturing at MassTech to expand and introduce automated lab manufacturing capabilities.

BostonSight enters a partnership with Conoptica to manufacture and distribute BostonSight SCLERAL in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco

2024

FitAcademy goes International

FitAcademy goes International with a program in Medellin, Colombia.

BostonSight enters a partnership with Moorfields NHS Eye Hospital to manufacture and distribute BostonSight SCLERAL in the United Kingdom.

2025

FitConnect® 3.0 releases

BostonSight introduces FitConnect® 3.0, globalizing our proprietary lens design and management platform. 

SmartFocus® becomes available for multifocal lens optics, and Quad-Elevation™ debuts, allowing for additional lens customization by the practitioner.

2026

New, expanded FitKit® launches

BostonSight SCLERAL launches a 14.5 – 15.5mm FitKit®, expanding the full range from 14.5mm to 19.0mm.
