POSITION SUMMARY

BostonSight is A nonprofit eye care clinic, research center, and onsite medical device manufacturing lab dedicated to restoring vision and improving quality of life. We strive to transform the understanding, treatment, and care of complex corneal disease within the global medical community and the public at large and empower practitioners to elevate the standard of care for patients. BostonSight employs approximately 40 staff, and annual revenues are $5 to $10 million. 

The overarching role of the BostonSight OD is that of a PROSE Provider. As such, they perform consultations for BostonSight PROSE treatment candidacy, as well as medical evaluations and comprehensive examinations of PROSE patients. BostonSight PROSE Providers have or develop expertise in the design and customization of devices used in PROSE treatment and in the training of patients with complex corneal disease. Additional responsibilities include the education of patients, referring providers, and third-party payors regarding PROSE treatment, BostonSight technologies, and participation in the BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellowship program, training BostonSight Network Clinic fellows, and of other trainees from the fields of Optometry and Ophthalmology across all BostonSight technologies. 

 EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  1. Doctor of Optometry degree from a duly accredited school of Optometry. 
  2. Completion of an Optometric residency/fellowship (Cornea and Contact Lens residency/fellowship strongly preferred). 
  3. Interest in research and education with respect to the treatment of complex corneal disease.  
  4. 1 to 5 years of experience. 

An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed below, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.  

LICENSURE

  1. Current eligibility or license by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Optometry. 
  2. Current eligibility or Certification by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to use and prescribe diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents in accordance with State regulations. 

REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES

  1. Maintain confidentiality and privacy of patients’ protected health and other personal information. 
  2. Skilled in addressing patient care needs in a compassionate and sympathetic manner. 
  3. Computer competency and flexibility with the use of prototype “in-house” software, as well as proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite software and other desktop applications. 
  4. Write, publish, and lecture on innovative BostonSight® PROSE treatment-related work. 
  5. Excellent writing skills required for both internal and external clinical communications. 
  6. High level of problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 
  7. Skilled in working in a collaborative, team-based practice. 
  8. Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional and courteous environment. 
  9. Adept at managing patient expectations and complaints. 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical  

  1. Assess and manage corneal diseases using the full scope of optometric procedures and treatment options. 
  2. Perform challenging refractions of irregular corneas and in the critical assessment of ocular health. 
  3. Use corneal diagnostic modalities, such as slit lamp, topography, pachymetry, photography, and confocal microscopy to detect, characterize, and document corneal pathologies. 
  4. Provide medical consultation to assess a patient’s ocular status and candidacy for BostonSight PROSE treatment. 
  5. Design, customize, and train patients in the use of PROSE devices, and troubleshoot challenges in each of these areas.  
  6. Develop long-range treatment plans, including periodic follow-up visits and coordination of care with patients’ referring and/or primary eye care providers. 
  7. Educate patients, family members, and others involved in the patient’s eye care. 
  8. Collaborate with colleagues to develop best practices associated with specific disease states and expand approaches to patient care. 
  9. Conform to internal guidelines and external regulatory compliance requirements for billing and documentation. 
  10. Participate in projects related to clinical and educational functions in the Needham headquarters and BostonSight Network Clinics. 
  11. Work alongside the BostonSight SVP of Clinical and Professional Affairs on all aspects of clinical education: PROSE and SCLERAL. 
  12. Other duties as assigned. 

Educational and Promotional

  1. Participate in the BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellowship program and train BostonSight Network Clinic Fellows and other clinical trainees, including the development of training materials and periodic refinement of training programs. 
  2. Represent BostonSight at various professional conferences and seminars. 
  3. Become a leader in the field of Optometry to advance the profession’s knowledge and competency in the treatment of complex corneal disease. 
  4. Educate patients, referring providers, third-party payors and insurance company representatives of the effect and benefits of BostonSight PROSE treatment and BostonSight technologies, which includes improvement in comfort, vision, and support of the ocular surface.  
  5. Demonstrate interest in extending the impact of BostonSight PROSE treatment through research, innovation, and publication. 
  6. Support BostonSight SCLERAL initiatives: webinars, tradeshows, consultation. 
  7. Maintain professional proficiency and expanding knowledge and competence for the benefit of patients treated at BostonSight.
