BostonSight’s Dr. Bita Asghari, PROSE Treatment provider and Associate Director of Clinical Education, recently published a case study in Global Insight titled “Haunted by Ghosting: HOA Correction in Keratoconus.”  The case shows a keratoconus (KCN) patient who experienced higher-order aberrations (HOAs), which can cause visual acuity problems.

Dr. Asghari posits that “although specialty CLs [contact lenses] including scleral lenses can greatly improve visual function and correct for some degrees of HOAs, residual HOAs can haunt patients’ visual function as they experience symptoms like blur, distortion, doubling, shadowing, glare, and ghosting. Correcting for HOAs can further improve visual function in patients suffering from KCN; therein, potentially further reducing the need to pursue invasive corneal surgery such as penetrating keratoplasty.

The case report includes graphical Figures and photographs, which show significant improvement in visual acuity for the patient thanks to custom HOA correction.

BostonSight is currently bringing together practitioners around North America to harness the benefits of HOA correction using data from a range of aberrometers. An aberrometer uses wavefront technology to provide a detailed analysis of the eyePatients with HOAs typically have more subtle vision errors that are more easily and accurately identified and corrected using wavefront techniques.

Traditional contact lenses or glasses are ineffective at correcting HOAs, however, BostonSight PROSE™ devices and BostonSight SCLERAL lenses use SmartSight™ FSE (front surface eccentricity) technology, which provides superior visual acuity as compared to many commercial lenses readily available, thanks to the aberration control this technology provides

SmartSight HOA™, to be launched later this year, improves upon SmartSight FSE, as it provides custom HOA correction as seen in Dr. Asghari’s studyBostonSight will be expanding access to this innovative technology to help additional patients who could benefit.
