BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellow
Dr. Lee Guo is an Assistant Professor within the department of Cornea, Cataract, and External Diseases. Dr. Guo is also among clinical faculty in the multidisciplinary Johns Hopkins Sjögren’s Center and a member of the Wilmer Ocular Surface Disease and Dry Eye team. He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Nova Southeastern University and completed ocular disease residency at C.W. Bill Young VAMC in Bay Pines, FL. Dr. Guo currently assists as research investigator to various active dry eye studies and provides patient care at Wilmer Eye Institute locations in the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.
BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellow
Dr. Michelle Hessen received her Doctor of Optometry from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. She completed her optometry residency in ocular disease at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, which included training at the Ocular Surface Disease and Dry Eye Clinic at Johns Hopkins. Following her residency, she was employed at Ludwick Eye Center, where she performed general ophthalmic care and managed pre- and post-operative cataract surgery patients. Dr. Hessen is currently on staff at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and is a vital part of the Ocular Surface Disease and Dry Eye Clinic. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.
Professor of Ophthalmology
Dr. Esen Karamursel Akpek is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She has been on the faculty of the Wilmer Eye Institute since 1999. Dr. Akpek is world renowned for her expertise in the surgical treatment of corneal diseases. She performs full thickness and partial thickness donor corneal transplantation as well as artificial corneal transplantation. Dr. Akpek also specializes in difficult and challenging cataract surgeries and complicated cases of anterior segment reconstruction procedures.
Dr. Akpek serves as the Director of the Ocular Surface Disease and Dry Eye Clinic. She, along with other members of the Dry Eye Team, cares for patients with inflammatory eye disorders, allergic and immunologic diseases of the cornea and the conjunctiva, scleritis, and uveitis. Dr. Akpek received her medical training at the Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey. Following her internship and residency training, she completed ophthalmology subspecialty training in Ocular Immunology and Uveitis at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. She completed a fellowship program in Cornea, Cataract, and External Disease at the Wilmer Eye Institute, The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
