A Closer Look at the Long-Term Effects of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome on Vision

June 22, 2024/0 Comments/in Blog Posts, PROSE/by michele
*This article is a guideline only and is not to be construed as medical advice. Always contact your eye care doctor with questions and for treatment options. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition known for its acute impact on the skin and mucous membranes. While the immediate consequences are well-documented, the long-term effects of SJS on vision often linger as silent challenges, significantly affecting the quality of life for survivors. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at the enduring impact of SJS on vision and explore some strategies for managing these long-term effects.

Understanding the Persistence of Vision Challenges

  1. Corneal Scarring and Visual Disturbances: One of the enduring effects of SJS is corneal scarring, resulting from severe inflammation during the acute phase. This scarring can cause visual disturbances, including blurred or distorted vision and vision loss.
  2. Chronic Dry Eyes and Discomfort: SJS often leads to chronic dry eyes, a condition where the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This ongoing dryness can result in discomfort, irritation, pain, and a gritty sensation, significantly impacting daily activities.

Navigating the Long-Term Vision Challenges

  1. Specialized Eye Care: Individuals who have experienced SJS should prioritize regular eye examinations with an ophthalmologist specializing in the management of SJS-related complications. These specialists can monitor the progression of vision challenges and recommend tailored interventions.
  2. Management of Dry Eyes: Chronic dry eyes require consistent management to alleviate discomfort and prevent further complications.
  3. PROSE Treatment: PROSE treatment uses specially designed prosthetic scleral lenses that vault over the corneal surface, creating a reservoir between the cornea and the lens. The reservoir is filled with preservative-free saline to bathe and hydrate the eye all day, providing immediate relief and comfort, and promoting healing. PROSE prosthetic lenses can also provide improved vision. Think of the lens as a “new” cornea, which creates the shape of a typical, healthy cornea. This allows light to enter the eye at the correct angle for improved vision
  4. Corneal Transplants and Surgical Options: In cases where corneal scarring severely impacts vision, corneal transplants may be considered. Surgical options aim to replace the damaged cornea with a healthy donor cornea, potentially restoring clearer vision. However, the decision for surgery depends on individual circumstances and must be carefully evaluated with your healthcare professionals.

Embracing Adaptive Strategies:

  1. Low Vision Aids and Assistive Technologies: Individuals facing persistent vision challenges may benefit from low vision aids and assistive technologies. These tools, such as magnifiers, screen readers, and specialized computer software, enhance independence and support daily activities.
  2. Counseling and Support Services: Coping with the long-term effects of SJS on vision can be emotionally challenging. Seeking counseling and support services can provide valuable guidance in adjusting to changes in visual abilities and maintaining a positive outlook on life.
As survivors of SJS navigate the long-term effects on vision, a proactive and holistic approach to eye care is paramount. Regular monitoring, specialized interventions, and adaptive strategies empower individuals to manage persistent challenges and enhance their overall well-being. By shedding light on the enduring impact of SJS on vision, we hope to foster awareness and encourage those affected to engage in ongoing care, unlocking a future where vision challenges are met with resilience and support.

Dry Eye Syndrome in Children: Signs, Causes, and Treatment Options

June 16, 2024/0 Comments/in Blog Posts, PROSE/by michele
*This article is a guideline only and is not to be construed as medical advice. Always contact your eye care doctor with questions and for treatment options. Dry eye syndrome in children is a common but often overlooked condition that can cause discomfort and affect their overall well-being. It occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, blurry vision, and potential damage to the eye surface.

Signs of Dry Eye Syndrome in Children

Children with dry eye syndrome may experience a range of symptoms, including:
  • Redness and Irritation – One of the most common signs of dry eye syndrome in children is redness and irritation in the eyes. This can cause discomfort and may lead to increased rubbing of the eyes.
  • Sensitivity to Light- Children with dry eye syndrome may also be more sensitive to light, which can impact their ability to concentrate and participate in outdoor activities.
  • Blurred Vision – Dry eyes can lead to blurred vision, making it difficult for children to focus on tasks such as reading or using electronic devices.

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome in Children

Several factors can contribute to the development of dry eye syndrome in children, including:
  • Screen Time – Excessive screen time, whether it’s from computers, smartphones, or tablets, can lead to reduced blinking and contribute to dry eyes.
  • Environmental Factors – Exposure to dry and dusty environments, as well as indoor heating or air conditioning, can also contribute to dry eye syndrome in children.
  • Medical Conditions – Certain medical conditions, such as allergies, autoimmune diseases, congenital eyelid malformations, or conditions in which the eyelid cannot close can increase the risk of developing dry eye syndrome.

Treatment Options for Children with Dry Eye Syndrome

When it comes to managing dry eye syndrome in children, there are several treatment options available, such as:
  • Artificial Tears – Using preservative-free artificial tears can help lubricate the eyes and provide relief from dryness and irritation.
  • Warm Compresses – Applying warm compresses to the eyes can help stimulate the production of natural tears and alleviate symptoms of dry eye syndrome.
  • Lifestyle Changes – Encouraging children to take regular breaks from screen time, stay hydrated, and avoid exposure to dry or dusty environments can help prevent and manage dry eye syndrome.
  • PROSE Devices and Scleral Lenses – these specialty lenses bathe and hydrate the eye all day, promoting comfort, healing, and improved vision, and protect the eyes from environmental factors. Learn more about PROSE here.
Dry eye syndrome in children is a complex condition that can significantly impact comfort and visual health. While there is no cure for moderate to severe dry eye, PROSE treatment and scleral lenses can improve quality of life, even in children. By understanding the signs, causes, and treatment options for this condition, parents and caregivers can take proactive steps to ensure the well-being of their children’s eyes.

Kinney’s Journey: From Diagnosis to Relief with PROSE Devices

June 11, 2024/0 Comments/in Blog Posts, Patient Stories/by michele
Meet Kinney. This story and video are published with permission.
Kinney, a Bible professor and preacher, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) around 2000 and later with Sjögren’s syndrome. It was a long journey. Reflecting on this period, Kinney recalls, “From the time I got RA till the time they said I had Sjögren’s, it was almost three years.” Sjögren’s syndrome is an immune system disorder that can accompany other immune system disorders, such as RA and lupus. It most often occurs in adults over age 40. The mucous membranes and moisture-secreting glands of the eyes and mouth are usually affected first — resulting in decreased tears and saliva. (Source: Mayo Clinic )

Initial Symptoms and Struggles

The ocular symptoms associated with Sjögren’s syndrome began to significantly impact Kinney’s life. “When I would read, my eyes would lock on my close vision, and I couldn’t see far away,” he explained. Over time, his eyes worsened, leading to extreme pain and deteriorating vision, eventually forcing him to stop driving. Despite consulting various eye doctors in Abilene, Texas, and later in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, he found little relief. The prescribed treatments, including Restasis and eye drops made from his blood serum, also known as serum tears, offered minimal help. Even punctal cauterization of tear ducts provided no relief.

Turning Point: Discovery of PROSE

During a visit to an eye doctor in the Dallas-Fort Worth area “just as I was walking out the door of his office,” the doctor said, ‘’You might look online at Boston Foundation for Sight.” This suggestion marked a pivotal moment in his journey.

Experience with PROSE Treatment

The fitting and treatment process at the Boston Foundation for Sight (now known as BostonSight) was a stark contrast to his previous experiences. Kinney noted the attentiveness and understanding of the staff. “They dimmed the lights in the exam room, and I thought, maybe these people understand how painful bright lights are for someone with bad eyes like me.” He was particularly impressed by Dr. Karen Carrasquillo and her thorough explanation of the fitting process for the PROSE devices. The impact of the PROSE devices was immediate and profound. “When they put the first lenses in, the pain went away. I thought at that moment we must be moving in the right direction.” The lenses restored his vision and eliminated the constant pain he had endured for years.

Improvement in Quality of Life

Before using PROSE devices, Kinney’s quality of life was severely affected. He could no longer read or drive and was in constant pain. The lenses, however, changed everything. “Now, I tell people I have my life back. I can read, I drive, I never have any pain,” he said. This transformation extended to his professional life as well. As a preacher, he found it difficult to perform his duties due to eye pain and impaired vision. After PROSE treatment, he returned to a normal, pain-free life and could carry out his job responsibilities.

Daily Use and Comfort

Kinney wears his PROSE devices for about 15 to 16 hours a day, from when he wakes up until he goes to bed. He rarely needs to remove and reapply them during the day, except occasionally to clean the outside surface. “Sometimes I’ll have to take them out and clean the outside surface of the lens because the oily part of the tears will get on the outside surface. But other than that, I don’t have to take them out for any reason.”

Advocacy and Recommendations

Kinney has strongly advocated PROSE treatment, recommending it to others with similar conditions. “I have recommended probably at least 50 people to come to you guys [BostonSight],” he said. His advocacy extends to social media platforms, where he engages with communities of individuals dealing with dry eye and Sjögren’s syndrome.  Kinney’s journey from debilitating pain and vision loss to restored vision and a pain-free life highlights the importance of innovative treatments like PROSE and compassionate care. As he continues to share his positive experience, he hopes to help many others find the relief they desperately need.
